Tell us a little about you, and your work? Why a career in media and communications?

I am an ambitious and driven thought leader in construction; guiding, inspiring, and directing future leaders and industry professionals.

I’m the founder of Australia’s first construction coach, The Construction Coach, and a number one Amazon best-selling author of Constructing Your Career, offering practical action and inspiration on building a career in construction.

I also host the industry-leading podcast, Constructing You, where I interview exemplary leaders and industry titans.

How did you arrive at a career in construction?

I did my undergraduate studies in architecture and found myself disillusioned as to what the degree would afford me. It was during an exhibition for the faculty of which I was part that demonstrated my inclination towards natural leadership and setting the direction. Basing my decisions on the conventional knowledge I had at the time, I changed course into construction management via a masters’ degree – and the rest is history! I fell in love with the challenges and opportunities that the industry afforded and valued the process of building.

Can you describe your experience as a young woman in a very male-dominated industry? What do you perceive as the greatest obstacles to more women pursuing a career in construction? I am lucky to have two much older brothers who both told me that school and university are not the panacea.

When I first fell into the industry, I adopted the same dialogue and discourse so prevalent – and that was a mistake. Singing the same song as others and adopting world views without challenging them did me and my career a disservice. At the same time, there was a notion as to what and how one should be when they entered into the industry, and I compromised a large part of myself to fit in, which again, was an offence to myself. There is more discourse around the challenges rather than the opportunity; it’s my duty as an industry leader to show people what’s possible.

You founded The Construction Coach over 18 months ago. What inspired the courageous decision to go out on your own?

I stood at the periphery of my career, feeling lost, invisible, confused. I gave away power and agency over my own trajectory, feeling dulled and limited. Then I realised that diminishing myself to fit in will never work. I realised there is so much more possibility than where I was.

I took back control over my career, maintained extreme ownership and unwavering self-belief in my vision and my purpose, which led to the business people see today.

To any young woman who is considering starting their own business, what is your advice to them?

Find a mentor who has the results you want and work with them. Don’t listen to advice from friends, family, and fools – all three are typically the first to say what can’t be done. You just have to go out there and take action on your dreams.

In your experience, what is the key to successfully marketing and promoting yourself?

The thought leadership model of entrepreneurship is about crafting a message, brand, and business that is an extension of all of who you are. When you go through the process of identifying yourself on the macro and micro and then establishing your authority – you’re seen and heard with great impact and influence.

What motivates you?

My ever-expansive vision, the opportunity to have a human experience and to be in a position to transform others.
